ArtPrize 2011 is over. My pictures were in the lobby of the Cornerstone Building (Fountain and Ionia) - www.artprize.org/artists/public-profile/24188. The pictures that made up the ArtPrize collage can be seen at http://thisismichigan.500px.com/artprize. NOW - most of the pictures that made up ArtPrize have been put up at THE ESSENTIAL BEAN in Caledonia. This is a coffee shop that regularly has art on the walls, and entertainment every Friday night (and great baked goods, soup, sandwitches, and coffee). The pictures are there for display and sales. www.essentialbean.com
The pictures at ArtPrize, and at The Essential Bean are a little different than anything I have done in the past. These are printed on metal in a way that allows some of the metal to show through. Seeing the metal in the lighter portions of the picture adds a glow or three dimensional effect that makes for a distinctly different picture. This medium is unique, and will not work well with some pictures. Normally, if you want to show detail in a picture, you will print on the whitest background you can find. The bare metal we are printing on here is not white. One thing that means is that you will loose detail in light areas. That is a negative point against this kind of print, but I use HDR photography and manipulation in Photoshop to create images that "work", and show the Michigan I wish to show. In the end, I love it.
