Tried and True
What caught our eye, here all alone,
admiring this barn as if our own?
Something of the past drew us here,
looking back at yesteryear.
Do you wonder why it’s all alone?
Where’s the rest of what was home?
Who planted flowers by the road?
Who chased a girl with a toad?
Was that an orchard over there,
where young or old might steal a pear?
Do you walk in the field for signs of the past?
Do you go back in time, and feel at last,
the life back then as though it’s now?
Have you and I gone back some how,
back to the roots of who we are,
carried by a barn, from where we are?
Go back through countless years of toil,
put a hand to the plow, smell the soil.....
We thank the farmer for sweat and tears,
and sticking through the leaner years.
Respect and honor are due the farm.
That’s why we stand… and watch this barn!
